How does it work?
The active ingredient in alli attaches to some of the natural enzymes in the digestive system, preventing them from breaking down about a quarter of the fat you eat. Undigested fat cannot be absorbed and passes through the body naturally. The excess fat is not harmful.

BEHAVIORAL CHANGE AND MOTIVATIONAL STRATEGIES FOR CANCER PREVENTING
There are many things that might interfere with your behaving in ways to prevent cancer. Here are some barriers (roadblocks) and strategies for overcoming them.
Roadblock
`1.Friends or relatives may smoke cigarettes. That means that you may be tempted to do so yourself. Even though we like to think we act independently, other people's behaviors influence us, particularly if wc like and respect those people. Furthermore, you do not even have to smoke to be subjected to the harmful effects of tobacco products. Breathing secondhand, or sidestream, smoke, can affect your susceptibility to C'HD and cancer.
2.You are afraid to perform self-examinations or have regular medical checkups because you fear that a cancer will be uncovered. In addition, you are fearful of the discomfort or embarrassment thai might accompany medical screenings.
3.You want to limit your ingestion of alcohol, but all of your friends drink and you don't think you can hang with them unless you join them in drinking as well. They might think you no longer fit in if you don't drink and won't want anything to do with you as a result.
Behavioral change strategy
1.Two behavioral change strategies appropriate here are contracting and social support. Find a friend or relative who would like to give up smoking. This will not be difficult. Smokers often try to quit; the problem is that they are usually unsuccessful. Draw up a contract for each of you to smoke less gradually over a period of weeks (gradual programming). Use the contract format described in chapter 3. If you do not presently smoke, make your contract for not starting to smoke and the other person's contract specific to gradually reducing the number of cigarettes smoked per week. The support you can provide each other, and the pressure of a contract that will periodically be evaluated, can be just the motivation needed to counteract the influence of other smoking friends and relatives.
2.Use a technique called self-talk to convince yourself that it is in your best interest to overcome your fear. Self-talk requires you to make statements to yourself that make you less anxious about the behavior you wish to perform. In this case, you can say the following to yourself: It will be better to find any cancer earlier rather than later. It is highly unlikely that I have cancer. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. 1 will probably not have cancer and will then feel a hundred times better for knowing that I am healthy.
3.Make a contract with your friends to be the designated driver when you go out with them so they will be more likely to appreciate your not drinking. Or use social support. Ask another friend who also might not want to drink to join you in abstaining. Or substitute a soft drink for the alcoholic drink you would usually hold in your hand. You could also use self-talk and tell yourself that by abstaining you are decreasing your chances of developing certain cancers.
