EXPLORING EXERCISE, INJURIES AND PREVENTING AND INJURY, ILNESS, AND DISEASE

MOST OF LEE'S friends exercise regularly. Some jog, cycle, and swim; others engage in aerobic exercise classes, or play sports such as tennis, racquetball, basketball, soccer, and touch football. At some time or other, it seems as if every one of them has experienced an injury. Sprained ankles, torn Achilles tendons, sore knees and backs, inflamed shoulders and elbows are just a few of the complaints Lee hears. Lee feels good most of the time although his weight is creeping upward, and he is generally tired by late afternoon. If it were not for the risk of injury, Lee would join his friends in an aerobic activity he enjoys.
Lee is also concerned about contracting infectious diseases. Four colds and a bout of influenza last year, and a father with type A hepatitis, frighten Lee and may be making him somewhat afraid of his environment. Lee doesn't understand how viral, bacterial, and other infections occur; let alone what he can do to prevent them. He isn't sure if regular exercise will reduce or add to his worries.
Entering into a fitness program involves a slight risk of injury or illness during the first month or so. Later a key benefit of improved conditioning is the reduction in the incidence and severity of serious exercise-, job-, and home-related injuries. The danger of injury increases considerably, however, when you fail to follow simple rules of training. For the weekend athlete, exercise can even be fatal. This chapter is designed to help you avoid common hazards and to make exercise a safe, enjoyable experience. It includes 10 steps for injury prevention for your body; discusses how tissue responds to injury; describes the proper use of cold, heat, and massage; provides basic treatment procedures for common injuries and illnesses; and desribes several common infectious diseases and where they come from.
