PROTECTING YOUR BODY FROM INFECTIOUS DISEASES: AGENTS OF INFECTION – FUNGI

A group of many-celled organisms—fungi, yeasts and molds—must live on other plants or animals because they contain no chlorophyll and cannot manufacture their own food. Fungi generally form filaments called hyphae and are blown to new locations in great numbers through the release of spores or seedlike cells. In humans, fungi usually affect the external body parts such as the skin, scalp, or nails. Dermatomycoses is an example of a fungus responsible for skin infections. Common ringworm is spread from animals or from other humans. Athlete's foot fungus is spread from person to person in showers, locker rooms, and so forth. Some generalized fungal infections, usually from the soil or vegetation, attack the lungs and the meninges of the brain.
Fungi require an environment of high humidity and warmth and are therefore more common in tropical climates. Fungal infections are rarely serious and can be controlled by topical application of fungicides. Proper personal hygiene (regular bathing, clean clothes, drying properly, and avoiding the use of other people's shoes, socks, and clothes) prevents fungal infections. Since practically all antibiotics are extracted from soil fungi, they are of little help in fighting fungal diseases and may actually destroy harmless bacteria in the body that help restrain the growth of these diseases. The trend toward overuse of antibiotic therapy may be contributing to the increase in fungal diseases.
