PROTECTING YOUR BODY FROM INJURY AND ILLNESS: PREVENTIVE TECHNIQUES ON HOT AND COLD DAYS

Hot, humid weather
1. Listen to weather reports and avoid vigorous exercise if the temperature is above 90° and the humidity is above 70 percent. Make hot days your light workout.
2. Avoid adding to normal salt intake. Do not use salt tablets. Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables.
3. Avoid lengthy warm-up periods.
4. Wear light-colored, porous, loose clothing to promote evaporation. Remove special equipment, such as football gear, every hour for 15 minutes.
5. Avoid wearing a hat (except for an open visor with brim) since considerable heat loss occurs through the head.
6. Never use rubberized suits that hold the sweat in and increase fluid and salt/potassium loss.
7. Wet clothing increases salt and sweat loss. Replace whenever possible.
8. Slowly increase the length of your workout by 5 to 10 minutes daily for nine days to acclimate to the heat.
9. Drink cold water (40°F) before (10-20 ounces 15 minutes prior to exercise), during, and after exercise. Hydrate before the workout with two or three glasses of water.
Cold weather
1. Listen to weather reports noting temperature and wind-chill factor. Unless the equivalent temperature is in the "little danger" area, avoid outside exercise.
2. Eat well during cold months: the body needs more calories in cold weather.
3. Warm up carefully until sweating is evident.
4. Use two or three layers of clothing rather than one heavy warm-up suit.
5. Protect the head (warm hat), ears, fingers, toes, nose, and genitals. A hat should cover the ears and face. Fur-lined supporters for men can also prevent frostbite to sensitive parts.
6. Never use rubberized, air-tight suits that keep the sweat in. When the body cools, the sweat starts to freeze.
7. Keep clothing dry, changing wet items as soon as possible.
8. Slowly increase the length of your workout by 5 to 10 minutes daily for nine days to acclimate to the cold.
9. Drink cold water freely before, during, and after exercise
