DEFENSES AGAINST INFECTIOUS DISEASES : NONSPECIFIC DEFENSES - DEFENSE MECHANISMS

Your body's nonspecific defenses, which help prevent infection from spreading when microorganic pathogens enter include the skin; the respiratory tract (mucous membranes of the nose, throat, and lungs); the gastrointestinal tract (oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, and alimentary tract); the urogenital tract (bladder, ureters, penis, vagina); the eyes; and the ear canals. These defenses represent a first line of defense against disease.
After the pathogen penetrates the body's external defenses, it encounters a second line of defense. Various enzymes and other compounds in blood can kill an infectious organism by causing it to break open, destroying its cell wall, or preventing it from multiplying. Special white blood cells, called phagocytes, engulf and digest bacteria. Larger phagocytic cells, called macrophages, are contained in the body's tissues, and these also fight off bacteria so that the offending organism may never be able to establish itself.
If the invader does become established, the body then resorts to a third line of defense in which tissue fluids and antibacterial proteins accumulate. Recall from the discussion of viruses that, in the case of a viral (rather than bacterial) infection, interferons are released from body cells that are infected with the virus. Interferons work in two ways: they can keep viruses from multiplying in infected body cells, or they can keep viruses from entering healthy body cells. The body's fight to repel the disease becomes evident through inflammation of the infected area and accompanying discomfort. Fever is also a sign that the body is fighting infection.
Once the third line of defense is penetrated, the infection may spread through the body tissues and perhaps into the bloodstream. If this happens, the infection becomes serious. If the infection remains localized, an abscess may form as more and more tissue in the infected area is destroyed. An abscess is a cavity filled with fluid, white cells battling the disease microbe, and pus (dead white cells). The body returns to normal only when enough of the infectious organisms are killed or rendered inactive so that the disease and its symptoms disappear.
