When your body is capable of producing its own antibodies to fight off specific disease-causing organisms, you possess what is called active immunity. Active immunity can develop naturally in your body or it can be acquired "artificially" from a vaccination. Once you have active immunity against certain infectious diseases, you seldom need to worry about being infected by them.
Sometimes, however, your active immunity might be threatened by unusual health circumstances, or it might be reduced by sickness or by chemotherapy for cancer. During times when your body's immune mechanism is especially weak, it may need an extra boost in the form of antibodies taken from another person or animal. The result of this extra boost is called passive immunity. Produced from gamma globulins taken from donors' blood, passive immunity antibodies tend to be shortlived, but they will get your immune mechanism through difficult periods. Mother's milk is a good source of passive immunity for newborns, which is one of the most important reasons why breast-feeding is preferable to bottle feeding.
