PREVENTING INFECTIOUS AND NONINFECTIOUS DISEASES
It is well known that, among other factors, our own behavior affects the level of risk we face in contracting both infectious and noninfectious diseases. Consequently, there is much you can do to reduce your own risk as well as that of family, friends, and other people.
1. By maintaining a high level of general health, you will help to set an example for other people. Your lifestyle should include a solid schedule of aerobic activity, sound nutrition, a complete absence of illicit drugs and tobacco, avoidance of alcohol, and regular medical and dental care.
2. How many unhealthy behaviors—smoking, careless use of alcohol, lack of regular exercise—can you identify among your family and friends? Make a list of the infectious and noninfectious diseases associated with each person who engages in unhealthy behaviors. Don't use scare tactics or pushiness, but let the person know that you care and that his or her behavior could be dangerous to that individual's health in terms of disease.
3. Do you have a friend or relative who has a noninfectious disease, such as diabetes, hypercholesteremia, or backache? If you would feel comfortable doing so, go to that person and discuss the disease with him or her. Learn as much as you can bout the disease and how this person copes with it. This will not only increase your understanding of and compassion for people with that disease, but it will also enable you to offer help and information to other people who have or are in some way affected by this disease.
4. Become informed about the cause, prevention, and treatment of backache. This will help you reduce your own risk of developing a problem later in life and also increase your sensitivity to the needs of friends and family members who suffer from this problem.
5. Develop a proposal for "Reducing Your Risk" disease awareness day on your campus. Focus on health behaviors that can reduce or prevent the risk of serious diseases. Discuss your proposal with personnel at the student health office at your college or university in order to develop a strategy for advertising and implementing your program. The program can be as simple as a series of posters or as elaborate as a series of speeches or brief seminars by faculty or student health service representatives.
