TREATMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES: MEASLES
A highly contagious disease, measles is caused by the measles virus. The airborne virus enters the upper respiratory tract, where it replicates and is spread via blood, mucus, or secretions throughout the respiratory tract. A red rash appears in the mouth and on the skin. The rash is caused by serum seepage from the blood and dead or dying cells forming discrete spots on the skin.
Measles is a serious disease and, under certain circumstances, can lead to inflammation of the brain, or encephalitis. It is a common disease: More than 80 percent of individuals over age 20 have an antibody to the virus. A measles vaccine is now available for children and adults; infants are usually protected by the maternal antibody until 6 months of age and should be vaccinated at 15 months.
Approximately 5 percent of young adults are susceptible to measles. Some of these individuals were never vaccinated and others received a vaccine that did not offer lifetime protection. Individuals who were born after 1956 should be protected by live vaccine. Revaccination should also be considered for those who received the live vaccine before age 1 and those who received the killed measles vaccine during the years 1963 to 1967. Those who are allergic to eggs or the antibiotic neomycin, pregnant women, and those with impaired immune responses should not be vaccinated.
