TREATMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES: INFLUENZA
The viral infection of the respiratory tract known as influenza (flu) is caused by three types of viruses (A, B, and C), and each has several strains that tend to change slightly from year to year. Type A occurs in epidemic cycles every 10 to 12 years and is the most serious. Type B produces a milder virus but can also reach epidemic proportions. Epidemics of Type C virus do not occur. Because so many different strains of flu exist, a vaccine must be repeated annually and may not offer protection unless the specific type of flu virus is identified. The elderly and the chronically ill whose resistance is lower may benefit from vaccination against Type A virus.
Treatment involves bed rest until body temperature is back to normal, along with symptomatic treatment similar to that for the common cold. If complications develop, such as earache, sinus pain, persistent cough, or sore throat, a physician should be consulted.
