TREATMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES: COMMON INFECTIOUS DISEASE - THE COMMON COLD
Contrary to popular belief, you cannot "catch" a cold from a draft, wet feet, a chill, or going out without a hat in inclement weather. The infection can, however, be transmitted by direct contact, such as handshakes or kissing, through mucus droplets coughed or sneezed into the air, and through contact with soiled tissues used by an infected person. The common cold is an infection of the membrane lining the upper respiratory tract, including the nose, the sinuses, and the throat. There is currently no known means of preventing, curing, or shortening a cold, but the symptoms can be treated with aspirin (for headache, fever, and body aches); a humidifier; saltwater gargle or lozenges (for sore throat); limited use of nasal decongestants; and fluids, such as juice, tea, or soup. Antibiotics are ineffective in treating a cold virus, and the value of taking massive doses of vitamin C to prevent or cure a cold is debatable.
Colds are more prevalent during the winter months, when people spend more time indoors. Preventive measures include, avoiding carriers (particularly during the first 24 hours of symptoms, when the virus is most contagious), avoiding handshakes, avoiding contact with the mucus membranes, and practicing proper hygiene (washing hands and face frequently).
