TISSUE RESPONSE TO INJURY: ACUTE PHASE
The actual healing process is unique to each individual and to different types of tissue. Age, nutrition, and the proper use of treatment techniques also affect the way tissue responds to the injury and the healing process. An understanding of how soft tissue responds (heals) to acute and chronic injuries will help you understand emergency treatment techniques and reinforce the correct use of heat, cold, and massage as treatment modalities.
Musculoskeletal injuries incurred through sports or exercise fall into three phases: acute, repair and regeneration, and remodeling.
Acute Phase
The acute phase of inflammation (the first three or four days after an injury) occurs as the body initially reacts to an injury with redness, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function or movement. During this period, pressure on nerve endings or ischemia may produce considerable pain. Some tissue death also takes place from the initial trauma or the lack of oxygen following the trauma. Acute inflammation is actually a protective mechanism designed to keep the problem local and remove some of the injurious agents so healing and repair can begin. Almost immediately after the injury occurs, blood flow to that area is decreased for a period from several seconds to as long as 10 minutes, and coagulation begins to seal the broken blood vessels. Numerous other vascular and cellular events occur to prepare the site for the next phase.
