DEFENSES AGAINST INFECTIOUS DISEASES : SPECIFIC DEFENCES – THE IMMUNE MECHANISM

Many specific kinds of infectious agents require the body's specific defenses. Specific defenses make up the body's immune mechanism. Immunity refers to the body's ability to recognize and defend itself against specific infectious agents. When the body recognizes a specific harmful outside agent, called an antigen, the body produces specific proteins, called antibodies, to battle this agent. This process is called the immune response. Antibodies are produced by lymphocytes—white blood cells formed in the bone marrow. B lymphocytes, or B cells, play the primary role in manufacturing antibodies. Antibodies are found primarily in the blood but are also present in mucous membranes in the respiratory, urogenital, and gastrointestinal tracts. They are very important in preventing both initial infection and the subsequent spread of infectious agents. Another kind of lymphocyte, T-lymphocytes or T-cells (also called T-suppressor or T-helper cells) circulate in the bloodstream, either suppressing or helping the general immune responses to other lymphocytes.
Let's look at an example of how the specific immune response works. A practical example of an antigenic stimulus is toxin, produced during a bacterial infection. Your immune system recognizes the toxin (antigen) as foreign, and antibodies produced in response to the toxin (by plasma cells), either in the past or during the present infection, combine chemically with the toxin. The resulting aggregation of toxin and antibodies is engulfed by immune cells, metabolized, and excreted. Thus the primary role antibodies is to combine with a specific antigens and aid in the clearance of antigen, from your body. Once you have been exposed to an antigen, you retain the ability to respond to it for a period of months or years.
