TREATMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES: MUMPS
The mumps virus exists in only one form. After inhalation of the virus, infection may proceed in the outer layer of cells of the respiratory tract or through the oral cavity into the parotid glands, located in the tissue in the floor of your mouth to either side of the tongue. Once the virus replicates and enters the blood, it can localize in salivary glands, reproductive organs (testes and ovaries), pancreas, thyroid, and brain.
The incubation period is 12 to 35 days, and the disease is characterized by swelling of the parotid glands, fever, and general malaise. In adults, the reproductive glands can be affected: Twenty percent of males around the age of puberty develop a swelling of the testes, but this does not generally lead to sterility. You may have heard that if only one side of your face swells during mumps infection, you could contract mumps again. This is not true. Once you have had mumps virus infection in one or both parotid glands, with or without swelling of the reproductive glands, you are protected against a future mumps infection.
