Staphylococcal Infections Staphylococci are bacteria that can be present on the skin without causing serious infection ("staph" infection). But once infection begins, the bacteria multiply and produce various toxins and enzymes that allow the infection to spread to the bloodstream, causing bacteremia, or bacteria in the blood. In the central portion of the lesion, the tissue dies and is used to nourish the bacteria. Thus, an abscess is formed, leading to breakage at the point of least resistance (skin), or to internal drainage of abscess contents in deep-tissue infections. You may have seen a dog suffering from an abscess acquired in a fight with a cat. Or you may have had a group of staph-infected hair follicles (pimples) appear on your
