Repair and Regeneration Phase
For a period of 48 to 72 hours after the injury to about six weeks, healing begins when cellular debris, erythrocytes, and the fibrin clot are being removed. Although some scar tissue will form following soft-tissue injuries, a desirable goal is to treat the injury properly to produce as little of such tissue as possible, since scar tissue is less viable than normal tissue. Primary healing occurs with little scar tissue formation in injuries where the edges are held closely together. When a gaping lesion and large tissue loss are present, considerable scar tissue forms during the healing process to replace lost tissue and bridge the gap.
Remodeling Phase
In this phase, which overlaps the repair and regeneration phase, scar tissue continues to increase and become stronger for three to six weeks following an injury. The actual strength of scar tissue increases for three months to a year. The complete remodeling of ligamentous tissue generally requires a year.
