PREVENTION AND EMERGENCY TREATMENT OF COMMON EXERCISE INJURIES AND ILLNESSES: RICE
Additional common injuries, illnesses, and problems associated with exercise which serves as a guide for diagnosis, prevention, emergency treatment, and determination of the need for a physician. If in doubt, consult a physician immediately or transport the injured person to a hospital emergency room.
RICE
Emergency home treatment for most muscle, ligament, and tendon strains, sprains, suspected fractures, bruises, and joint inflammations involve four simple actions known as the RICE approach.
Rest To prevent additional damage to injured tissue, stop exercising and immobilize the injured area immediately. If the lower extremities are affected, use crutches to move about.
Ice To decrease blood flow to the injured area and decrease swelling, apply ice (crushed in a towel or ice pack) directly to the skin immediately for 15 to 20 minutes. Use cold applications intermittently for 1 to 72 hours.
Compression To limit swelling and decrease the likelihood of hemorrhage and hematoma formation, wrap a towel or bandage firmly around the ice and injured area. An elastic wrap soaked in water and frozen in a refrigerator can be used to apply both compression and cold.
Elevation To help drain excess fluid through gravity, improve the venous return of blood to the heart, and reduce internal bleeding and swelling, raise the injured limb above heart level.
Home treatment should begin as soon as possible. The procedure should be: (1) Evaluate the injured area. (2) Apply ice for 20 minutes. (3) Compress the ice firmly against the injury. (4) Replace the ice pack with a compress wrap and pad. (5) Rest the injured area. (6) Reapply ice in 1 to 1-1/2 hours. (7) Remove the elastic wrap and elevate the area before you go to bed. (8) Begin ice therapy immediately on rising in the morning. On the fourth or fifth day, discontinue cold treatments, and begin to apply moist heat or dry heat or use a whirlpool twice daily for 15 to 20 minutes. Depending on the severity of the injury and amount of swelling and pain, mild exercise can resume in four or five days. Another acronym to remind you of the proper procedure in treating minor injuries is PRICE; the "P" is a reminder to see a physician.
Considerable misinformation is available concerning proper home emergency treatment. Unfortunately, incorrect treatment can worsen the injury or actually produce serious side effects that may require surgery later.
